Highgrove House Prospective Resident FAQs
We understand the challenge of finding the most appropriate care home for yourself or your loved one. Many considerations come into play, and we want to do our part to simplify the decision-making process. We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you determine whether Highgrove House might be the correct fit.
How much are care fees?
For a breakdown of our fees, please refer to the Care Fee section of our website.
What is included in your care fees?
Our care fees include:
- Cost of care
- Room accommodation
- All meals and refreshments
- Housekeeping and laundry services
- All organised activities, exercises, and entertainment
Please note that our care fees do not encompass any therapeutic services, including chiropody, dentistry, audiology, hairdressing, etc. Our fees do not cover taxi service or other costs associated with staff accompanying residents to the hospital, doctor’s office, or other professional appointments. Additional room toiletries and amenities can be purchased at an extra cost that will always be disclosed in advance.
Do you accept Social Services Care Rates?
While we primarily cater to privately self-funded residents, we can also accept funding from local authorities, provided you are able to top up by paying the difference between the social service rates and our care fees. We always recommend that prospective residents seek independent financial consultation to explore different options and determine the best use of their funds.
How often do you increase your care fees?
We review our fee annually. Any fee increase will reflect inflation rates, increases in minimum wage and living expenses, along with third-party supplier costs.
Can I have a trial period at Highgrove House?
Highgrove House offers both Day and Respite Care service options. These short-term stays are a great way for prospective residents to test whether Highgrove House is the right environment for them in the long term. Residents can try respite care for a few weeks. Then, even if they move in on a permanent basis, they will still be given a 1-month trial period to decide if Highgrove House is right for them. During the 1-month trial period, with the approval of their family representative, a resident can depart on short notice with no additional charges. Should a resident decide to leave after the trial period, we require 1 month’s notice.
Do visitors need to make an appointment to visit me?
No prior appointment is necessary. Family and friends are always welcome at Highgrove Hours. Visitors often drop by without notice. We want residents to understand that Highgrove House is their home. As such, we expect people to come and spend time with their loved ones and stay as long as they wish.
What is the staff-to-resident ratio?
We use a care management system and capacity tools to assess whether we are well-staffed to provide the highest quality of care and meet residents’ needs. Because residents may require additional staff support under certain circumstances, we are able to adjust our care staff ratio accordingly.
Can I leave the care home if I change my mind?
Yes, you may terminate your residency contract without notice at any time during the first month. After the trial period, either you or Highgrove House can terminate the agreement by giving one month’s prior notice. In the event that a resident’s needs have changed and Highgrove House is unable to meet those needs, the agreement may be terminated without advance notice. Both sides can terminate the agreement on 14 days’ notice for any material breach which is not remedied within a reasonable timeframe.
Do the care fees cease immediately on death?
The charges will cease to apply when the room is cleared and all belongings are removed.
Will I have access to my own GP?
We normally register our residents with the GP surgery close to Highgrove House. However, if a resident wishes to remain with their current GP, we will do our best to accommodate and will check with your current GP to see that they would agree to this.
Can I bring in my pet?
We understand the important benefits of maintaining relationships with pets, and therefore allow for pet visits when the pet is accompanied by friends or family. We also organise regular pet therapy sessions. However, as Highgrove House is a small care home, we are not able to allow pets to live in the home on a permanent basis.
Do you have rooms for couples?
Yes, we do have a limited number of double rooms that can accommodate couples where appropriate. However, we will need to assess whether room sharing is the appropriate scenario for each individual.
Can I bring my own furniture and other belongings?
Our rooms are fully furnished; however, residents may bring their favourite pieces of furniture and other belongings to create a more personalised, home-to-home experience for themselves.

We are so glad that we chose Highgrove for our mum as she has settled in so well. Mum’s move from her home to Highgrove House went so smoothly, and she transitioned to the care home setting so quickly. Personally, we have found all the staff at Highgrove extremely helpful from the time I first rang Highgrove. The Highgrove accommodation looks very clean everywhere, yet welcoming and homely. Mum’s bedroom is so lovely with the French doors into the garden for her to enjoy in the summer months. The Highgrove menu looks great too, with varied and homemade, nutritious and really appetising meals Carold and Adrian
