Residents enjoying chef-prepared meals in a care home

More than a care home

Nutrition

Highgrove House offers a wide range of food choices to meet our residents’ personal preferences, along with their specific nutritional requirements. We source our produce and meat from the local green grocers and family butchers. Our chefs prepare all three meals daily in our kitchen using fresh, high-quality ingredients geared toward cognitive function and overall health.

Meal selections are based around a four-week menu cycle that is continuously updated and supplemented with seasonal selections and dishes that incorporate the freshest ingredients available.

Residents take their meals in a bright and serene dining room setting. We make a point of keeping freshly made cakes and biscuits on hand for residents’ families and other visitors.

Accommodation

At Highgrove House, we’ve chosen dementia-friendly colours for our lounges and dining room. We’ve achieved relaxing and enriching surroundings both indoors and outdoors. Residents tend to flowers, vegetables, and potted plants in our outdoor garden space and enjoy lovely window views from inside.

All 19 resident bedrooms are appropriately sized and tastefully furnished and include en-suite facilities. Many residents bring their own furniture and artwork to express their individual style and feel even more at home.

Other Amenities

We arrange weekly onsite visits from a hairdresser, chiropodist,  dental hygienist, optician, and nurse practitioner from the GP Surgery.  We also arrange visits from the Community Matron, District Nurses and audiologists based on residents’ needs.

Activities

At Highgrove House, no two days are the same. We strive to offer activities and entertainment that suit all tastes. Critically, we plan and implement events that stimulate cognitive function and promote social interaction.

Arts and Crafts

We host activities like painting, card making, and flower arranging. As part of our art club activities, we proudly display our residents’ artwork throughout the home.

Strolls to the Seaside and Town

Highgrove House is perfectly situated for a stroll into town, and it’s a mere five-minute walk to the sea.

Outings

We organise regular minibus trips to various gardens, museums, art galleries and shopping centres.

Music

We host weekly music sessions that include drumming, sing-alongs, accordion playing, and choral singing led by local musicians.

Visitors from the Community

Our team coordinates with local businesses and organisations for unique experiences like storytelling workshops, pet therapy, and visits from school children.

Exercise

We arrange armchair yoga and other gentle exercises both indoors and outside in our gardens. Additionally, we always encourage residents to take an active interest in major televised sporting events.

Games and Creative Exercises

At Highgrove House, we enjoy weekly poetry reading sessions along with board games, puzzles and quizzes designed to keep the brain active.

Home Entertainment

We offer a wide range of DVDs for our movie and popcorn afternoons, as well as dedicated television viewing areas for those who want to watch their favourite shows.

Special Events

Our residents share in celebratory gatherings and occasions like summer parties, birthdays, and holiday festivities.

Reminiscence Therapy

Some of our most important exercises include our monthly theme and event days. Volunteers, who are former care professionals, visit Highgrove House to engage in one-on-one conversations with our residents, using the theme as a springboard for their discussions.

Community and Charity Events

We are extremely proud of the Worthing region and frequently participate in community engagement opportunities.

Schools and Colleges

We connect with the local colleges and schools to offer work experience, training, and placement assistance that helps students develop their careers in the care sector.

Business

We have many links to the local business community, and work with local suppliers as much as possible to support the local economy.

Charity

Highgrove House supports charitable causes like the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friendly Society, and Beehive Dementia Hub, along with initiatives launched through local centres and churches.

Annual Wheel and Walk

We have been hosting the Annual Wheel and Walk Charity Event for the last five years. At this event, residents, their families and the Highgrove team and volunteers walk to the Worthing Pier, raising funds for Alzheimer’s organisations and local Dementia charities.
